A chiller installation must supply the cooling water required by the building or process under the intended operating conditions. We coordinate condenser type, water temperatures, flow, pumps, pipework and controls. SCA Engineering covers selection, installation, commissioning and maintenance planning for commercial and industrial chilled-water systems.
Cooling duty and condenser choice
Air-cooled and water-cooled chillers have different installation and maintenance requirements. An air-cooled unit needs an appropriate outdoor-air path and clearance; a water-cooled arrangement depends on the condenser-water circuit and its associated heat-rejection equipment. We compare the design cooling load, ambient conditions, water temperatures and available site infrastructure. Access for servicing and future replacement is included in the plant layout.
Water-side design and protection
Required flow, pipe resistance and the selected evaporator’s operating limits guide hydraulic design. Pumps, strainers, air removal, isolation and balancing devices are selected as part of the circuit. Suitable insulation and vapour control are important on chilled-water pipework. We check the minimum water-volume and flow conditions specified for the selected model, rather than applying one buffer-tank or pump rule to every chiller.
Partial load and control interfaces
A chiller’s nominal output does not describe its behaviour through every load condition. Staging, compressor control and water-temperature settings should follow the project’s operating profile. Multiple units may require coordinated sequencing. We define the interface with terminal units and building controls, including the conditions under which the plant is enabled and how faults are reported to the operator.
Maintenance and commissioning
Heat-exchanger condition, water treatment, strainers and the air or condenser-water path influence operation. Commissioning checks the relevant flows, temperatures, pressure readings and control response. Maintenance records help distinguish equipment faults from restrictions or unsuitable operating conditions elsewhere in the system. The handover includes the installed hydraulic layout and access to valves and measurement points so future servicing can be planned.

Technical points we check
- Cooling load at the intended outdoor and leaving-water conditions.
- Condenser arrangement, clearances and heat-rejection infrastructure.
- Evaporator flow limits, water volume, balancing and chilled-water insulation.
- Partial-load sequencing, operating measurements and service access.
From site survey to handover
We coordinate the heat source, terminal units, pipework, air system, electrical supplies and controls as a complete installation. The agreed scope identifies who supplies each interface and which operating conditions will be verified. Commissioning records include the relevant flow, temperature, pressure and control checks. We hand over the final layout and equipment information with clear maintenance access and operating guidance for the facilities team.
Frequently asked questions
Can a chiller be selected by floor area alone?
Floor area does not establish the full cooling load. Occupancy, envelope, equipment, ventilation and operating conditions must be evaluated, with output checked at the selected model’s design conditions.
Does a water-cooled chiller require additional plant?
It requires an appropriate condenser-water and heat-rejection arrangement. Pumps, treatment, maintenance and the overall site conditions must be evaluated alongside the chiller.
