FK-5-1-12 is an agent designation; a complete suppression installation also depends on the selected manufacturer’s approved cylinder, valve, pipe and nozzle arrangement. We assess the protected enclosure, design conditions and personnel interfaces before developing the system. SCA Engineering coordinates room integrity, pressure relief, controls and commissioning within the project scope.

Chemical identity and brand identity

FK-5-1-12 identifies the chemical agent, while Novec 1230 is a brand name associated with a product using that agent. The terms are not interchangeable descriptions of every supplier’s system. We confirm the agent source, product identity and available system documentation. Supply and refill arrangements should be considered for the specific product rather than inferred from a familiar trade name.

Volume, temperature and distribution

The protected volume and applicable temperature conditions enter the agent calculation. Room additions, raised floors or ceiling voids can affect the scope of protection. Distribution must use a compatible, approved cylinder and nozzle combination with the manufacturer’s calculation method. An existing FM-200 installation cannot be converted simply by filling its cylinders with another agent; compatibility and the complete design need a fresh assessment.

Discharge, retention and pressure relief

A rapid discharge and adequate agent-retention time are separate performance requirements. An enclosure with closed doors is not automatically sufficiently tight. Integrity checks, sealing details and the ventilation sequence are coordinated for the chosen protection strategy. A compact cylinder arrangement also does not remove the need to assess discharge pressure and any required pressure-relief provisions for the enclosure.

Detection and return to operation

Early detection, warnings, evacuation, manual controls and the agreed ventilation interfaces are coordinated in the operating sequence. After discharge, the protected equipment and suppression system require an appropriate assessment before service is restored. We identify the inspection, agent replacement and reinstatement responsibilities, with a record of the installed room boundary and nozzle network for future changes.

Technical points we check

  • Verified agent and complete system identity, supported applications and supply arrangements.
  • Protected volume, temperature conditions and approved pipe/nozzle calculation.
  • Separate assessment of discharge, retention, room integrity and pressure effects.
  • Detection, personnel warnings, ventilation interfaces and reinstatement plan.

From site survey to handover

We begin with the protected hazard, occupancy, building layout and available infrastructure. The design documents define the selected system, equipment limits, detection and control interfaces, installation responsibilities and acceptance checks. Tests are planned with the building team so that isolations, alarms and reinstatement are controlled. We provide the agreed drawings, equipment records and operating instructions, including the changes that require the protection strategy to be reviewed.

Frequently asked questions

Is FK-5-1-12 simply another name for Novec 1230?

FK-5-1-12 is the agent designation; Novec 1230 is a trade name. We specify the actual product and the complete approved suppression system rather than treating all brands as identical.

Can existing FM-200 cylinders be filled with FK-5-1-12?

A refill-only conversion should not be assumed. Cylinders, valves, agent, pipes and nozzles must be assessed as a compatible system with a validated design.
