Sprinkler design brings the hazard, ceiling geometry, water distribution and water supply into one coordinated project. We assess the building use, storage arrangement and actual pipe network before selecting the system and sprinkler family. SCA Engineering supports new installations and revisions with hydraulic calculations, installation coordination and documented acceptance checks.

How an automatic sprinkler operates

A conventional closed automatic sprinkler responds to heat at its thermal element. A smoke detector does not open all of these sprinklers simultaneously. Open-nozzle deluge systems have a different operating sequence. We make this distinction clear in the design and operating guidance, with detection, water-control valves and sprinkler elements described according to their actual functions.

Sprinkler selection and obstructions

Orientation, response type, temperature rating, K-factor and approved application are assessed together. The same connection size does not make two sprinklers interchangeable. Beams, ducts and storage racks can obstruct distribution even when there is no physical clash with the head. We compare the ceiling and obstruction layout with the selected sprinkler’s installation requirements and coordinate any concealed sprinkler with its compatible cover assembly.

Hydraulic calculations follow the installed network

The design demand is evaluated through the real pipe lengths, internal diameters, fittings and elevation differences. The water source and any agreed concurrent demands form part of the calculation. A pump’s rated pressure is not the pressure available at the most demanding sprinkler. If routing changes during installation, the revised network must be compared with the calculation before final drawings are issued.

Environment, valves and future alterations

Wet, dry and pre-action systems have different control arrangements and operating sequences. Freezing conditions and the protected equipment inform selection. Control valves, test connections and flow alarms require clear identification and access. Changes to partitions, ceilings, stored goods or storage height can affect the protection basis; they should be reassessed rather than treated as simple head relocations.

Technical points we check

  • Hazard and storage data, chosen design basis and water-source information.
  • Sprinkler identity, K-factor, response, temperature rating and compatible accessories.
  • Actual pipe network, obstruction coordination and hydraulic calculation.
  • Zone valves, tests, alarm interfaces and recorded return to service.

From site survey to handover

We begin with the protected hazard, occupancy, building layout and available infrastructure. The design documents define the selected system, equipment limits, detection and control interfaces, installation responsibilities and acceptance checks. Tests are planned with the building team so that isolations, alarms and reinstatement are controlled. We provide the agreed drawings, equipment records and operating instructions, including the changes that require the protection strategy to be reviewed.

Frequently asked questions

Does a smoke alarm open every sprinkler?

Not in a conventional closed automatic sprinkler installation. Each sprinkler operates through its thermal element when its conditions are met. Open-nozzle deluge systems have a different activation arrangement.

Can sprinklers simply be extended below a new ceiling?

A ceiling change may affect position, obstruction rules and hydraulic conditions. We review the revised arrangement and selected sprinkler requirements before deciding the necessary modification.
