Foam protection is matched to the stored or processed liquid and the selected system’s approved equipment combination. We coordinate the concentrate, proportioner, discharge devices, water supply and test arrangements. SCA Engineering assesses existing and new installations with the operating team, including the practical implications of changing concentrate or protected fuel.
Fuel compatibility comes first
Hydrocarbon fuels and polar solvents do not automatically use the same foam concentrate. The protected liquid, application method and system approval guide selection. A product name or general foam classification is not enough to establish suitability. We confirm the actual concentrate identity and compatible equipment, with the operating conditions and protected surface recorded in the design basis.
Concentrate and equipment form a system
An approval for one concentrate does not cover every proportioner and discharge-device combination. Viscosity and temperature conditions can affect proportioning behaviour. We compare the selected concentrate with the proportioner’s operating range and the discharge devices’ requirements. Simply replacing an older concentrate, including a change to a fluorine-free product, can require equipment changes and a new assessment of the water demand.
Verify proportioning at the real duty
The specified concentration must be delivered across the relevant flow range. Water supply, pipe losses and the operating devices determine the actual duty. We assess the low and high flow conditions covered by the installation, rather than checking a single nominal point. Storage condition, material compatibility and maintenance access are considered with the supply and proportioning layout.
Testing and concentrate management
Test discharge must be collected or handled through the agreed environmental and operational arrangements. A fluorine-free description does not automatically permit test effluent to be discharged into a drain. We identify the concentrate, storage records, test method and reinstatement responsibilities. Changes in fuel, equipment or concentrate supply should trigger a design review before the protection is returned to normal service.

Technical points we check
- Actual fuel or solvent and the selected concentrate’s approved application.
- Compatibility of concentrate, proportioner and discharge devices.
- Proportioning at relevant flow and temperature conditions, with water-supply demand.
- Concentrate identity, test-effluent handling and recorded reinstatement.
From site survey to handover
We begin with the protected hazard, occupancy, building layout and available infrastructure. The design documents define the selected system, equipment limits, detection and control interfaces, installation responsibilities and acceptance checks. Tests are planned with the building team so that isolations, alarms and reinstatement are controlled. We provide the agreed drawings, equipment records and operating instructions, including the changes that require the protection strategy to be reviewed.
Frequently asked questions
Can any foam be used on any flammable liquid?
No. Fuel compatibility and the approved application matter, particularly when comparing hydrocarbons with polar solvents. The concentrate and complete equipment combination must be verified.
Can AFFF simply be replaced with fluorine-free foam?
A direct substitution should not be assumed. Proportioning, viscosity, discharge devices and water demand may change, requiring a review of the complete installation.
