Water mist uses fine droplets within a system approved for its intended application. The protection depends on the selected technology, nozzle arrangement, operating conditions and tested limits. We assess the hazard and room geometry first, then coordinate the pump or supply arrangement, pipework, detection and service access for the specific project.
Application approval matters
Water-mist systems do not share one universal design method or pressure. The system’s verified application and manufacturer requirements determine where it can be used, how the nozzles are arranged and which operating conditions apply. A fine spray alone is not evidence that a generic arrangement will control the hazard. We establish the applicable approval and design boundaries before comparing equipment.
Droplets must reach the intended area
Droplet behaviour, heat transfer and distribution depend on the selected nozzle and application. Ducts, machinery, shelves and partitions can obstruct the spray or alter the protected volume. We compare the actual room and equipment arrangement with the system’s permitted conditions. A layout change can require a new evaluation even when the room area and number of nozzles appear unchanged.
Nozzles, airflow and activation
Open-nozzle and automatic-nozzle arrangements operate differently. Detection and water-control interfaces must reflect the selected configuration. Airflow, ventilation shutdown where specified and enclosure openings are evaluated against the approval conditions. We do not assume that the same control sequence is suitable for every water-mist application, or that ordinary sprinkler operating assumptions can simply be transferred to the selected system.
Water quality and ongoing service
The specified water quality, filtration and component compatibility help keep the nozzle passages and distribution system serviceable. Pumps, supply devices, accessible isolation points and testing arrangements are coordinated with the building. We agree the commissioning checks and maintenance responsibilities, with clear documentation of any changes that affect the protected equipment, nozzle arrangement or operating conditions.

Technical points we check
- The selected system’s verified application and permitted design conditions.
- Nozzle type, geometry, obstructions and specified pressure/flow requirements.
- Ventilation and activation interfaces for the chosen arrangement.
- Water quality, filtration, testing and accessible maintenance.
From site survey to handover
We begin with the protected hazard, occupancy, building layout and available infrastructure. The design documents define the selected system, equipment limits, detection and control interfaces, installation responsibilities and acceptance checks. Tests are planned with the building team so that isolations, alarms and reinstatement are controlled. We provide the agreed drawings, equipment records and operating instructions, including the changes that require the protection strategy to be reviewed.
Frequently asked questions
Can water mist replace sprinklers everywhere?
No. Suitability depends on the selected system’s approval and the project’s protection requirements. A replacement must be assessed for the actual hazard and accepted design basis.
How much water will the system save?
The water demand is application- and system-specific. We can compare defined designs, but do not assign one general saving percentage to every water-mist installation.
