SCA / Fire Protection

Deluge and Water Spray Systems.

Deluge and water-spray protection is designed around the surface or hazard that must receive water. We coordinate open nozzles, the control valve, detection, water supply and drainage as one system. The application may involve industrial equipment or selected high-risk areas, with the operating sequence and protection boundaries defined for the project.

Deluge and water-spray protection is designed around the surface or hazard that must receive water. We coordinate open nozzles, the control valve, detection, water supply and drainage as one system. The application may involve industrial equipment or selected high-risk areas, with the operating sequence and protection boundaries defined for the project.

Open nozzles and the deluge zone

When the relevant deluge valve operates, the open nozzles in its connected zone receive water together. This differs from ordinary closed sprinklers that respond individually to local heat. We define the activation logic, zone boundaries, valve arrangement and actual feedback signals. A command to open the valve and confirmation that the system has operated are separate pieces of information.

Protect the actual geometry

Equipment surfaces are not always on one flat plane. Nozzle position, angle and approved spray pattern must match the protected object, with structural members and adjacent equipment considered as obstructions. Increasing pressure does not automatically extend approved coverage. We use the selected nozzle’s documented conditions and the project’s design basis, then compare the installed positions with the drawing.

Water supply for the agreed demand

The source assessment includes the zones that may operate together under the selected fire scenario and any additional demand included in the design basis. Pipe friction, elevations, valve losses and nozzle duty affect the required supply. An existing pump cannot be assumed adequate because the system has a pressure gauge or because its nominal flow exceeds one zone’s estimated volume.

Testing, drainage and electrical interfaces

Water discharge can affect access, adjacent equipment and the site drainage route. The test method is therefore agreed with the operation team and relevant equipment owners. Detection, manual operation, valve reset and any electrical isolation interfaces are coordinated. Maintenance access and reinstatement after testing are documented so that a successfully opened valve is not left isolated from the normal protection arrangement.

Technical points we check

  • Protected equipment geometry, nozzle approval and obstruction layout.
  • Deluge zones, concurrent demand and the complete water-supply calculation.
  • Detection, valve operation, feedback and any equipment-isolation interfaces.
  • Drainage, agreed test method and recorded reinstatement.

From site survey to handover

We begin with the protected hazard, occupancy, building layout and available infrastructure. The design documents define the selected system, equipment limits, detection and control interfaces, installation responsibilities and acceptance checks. Tests are planned with the building team so that isolations, alarms and reinstatement are controlled. We provide the agreed drawings, equipment records and operating instructions, including the changes that require the protection strategy to be reviewed.

Frequently asked questions

Is deluge the same as a normal sprinkler system?

No. A deluge zone normally uses open nozzles supplied when its control valve operates. Conventional automatic sprinklers remain closed until their individual thermal elements operate.

Can a standard nozzle spacing be used for every transformer?

No single spacing covers every installation. The equipment geometry, selected nozzle’s approved pattern and project design conditions determine the arrangement.
