Fire Hydrant Systems.

Hydrant protection is planned around the site layout, access and available water supply. We coordinate hydrant locations, pipe routes, valves and the agreed fire-water demand. SCA Engineering assesses new networks and changes to existing installations with hydraulic calculations, maintainable isolation and a defined test and reinstatement process.

Static pressure is not flow capacity

A pressurised line does not demonstrate that the required flow is available at the relevant residual pressure. The source, pipe friction, fittings and elevation affect performance when water is flowing. We compare the design demand with the actual supply data and agreed operating measurements. The analysis should identify the hydrants and other systems included in any concurrent-demand scenario.

Concurrent demands and network arrangement

Hydrants and sprinkler systems may share parts of a water supply where the accepted design permits it, but their demands must be coordinated. A ring main can provide alternative flow routes under defined conditions; valve position and isolation status affect that benefit. We assess the complete network rather than describing a ring layout as automatically adequate or necessary for every site.

Buried pipework and environmental conditions

Buried connections need appropriate restraint for pressure forces, with materials and installation details selected for the project. Hydrant type, ground conditions and freezing exposure influence the arrangement. A generic drainage detail cannot be applied to every hydrant. We coordinate access, vehicle routes and service clearance so that the equipment remains practical to approach, inspect and maintain.

Extensions, tests and return to service

Adding a hydrant changes the demand or network conditions and should not be treated as a pipe extension alone. We compare the revised routing, water source and valve arrangement with the calculation. Testing, drainage and temporary isolations are planned with site operations. The handover records valve identification, the areas affected by isolation and the checks required before the section returns to normal service.

Technical points we check

  • Site access, hydrant location and required flowing pressure/duty.
  • Source capacity, concurrent demand and valve states in the complete network.
  • Buried-pipe restraint, hydrant type and freezing conditions.
  • Accessible isolation, test-water handling and recorded reinstatement.

From site survey to handover

We begin with the protected hazard, occupancy, building layout and available infrastructure. The design documents define the selected system, equipment limits, detection and control interfaces, installation responsibilities and acceptance checks. Tests are planned with the building team so that isolations, alarms and reinstatement are controlled. We provide the agreed drawings, equipment records and operating instructions, including the changes that require the protection strategy to be reviewed.

Frequently asked questions

Does pressure at a hydrant prove there is sufficient water?

No. The available flow at the required residual pressure must be assessed. Static pressure alone cannot establish the design duty.

Can a new hydrant simply be added to the existing line?

The extension requires a review of demand, pipe losses, source capacity and the valve arrangement. The revised installation is then compared with the accepted design basis.
