Industrial ventilation begins with the process that creates the contaminant. We assess heat, dust, vapour, fumes and working patterns before selecting extraction and replacement-air arrangements. SCA Engineering develops ventilation for factories, workshops, production areas and paint booths around the process, the people working nearby and the practical requirements of maintenance.
Capture close to the source
General air renewal and local exhaust ventilation have different jobs. Where a process releases a contaminant, capture close to the source can reduce its spread through the workspace. Hood position, the direction of release and cross-draughts affect collection. We review how operators use the equipment and where access is required so that the extraction point remains effective during actual production, rather than only when the workstation is empty.
Choose equipment for the contaminant
Dust collectors, filters, process fans and ducts are selected for the material and its conditions. Particle characteristics, moisture, temperature and potential combustible or corrosive components matter. A standard fan or filter is not suitable for every process. Where an explosion or ignition risk exists, it requires a specific assessment and equipment strategy; the ventilation layout must be coordinated with the wider process-safety provisions.
Paint-booth airflow and filtration
Paint-booth ventilation must consider the application method, overspray, solvent vapour, airflow pattern and operator position. Filter stages and maintenance requirements are evaluated with the booth and coating process. Supply and exhaust should support the intended working conditions without carrying contamination into neighbouring areas. Changing the coating, production intensity or booth layout can alter the required protection and should trigger a review of the installed system.
Replacement air, balancing and operating cost
Extracting a large air volume without an adequate replacement-air route can disrupt door operation and draw air from unwanted spaces. We coordinate make-up air and any conditioning load with the process exhaust. Duct pressure loss, filter condition and fan control influence energy use. Commissioning records the relevant air volumes and control settings; the maintenance plan identifies inspection, filter cleaning or replacement and safe access to collected material.

Technical points we check
- Process materials, emission points, operating temperatures and working patterns.
- Capture geometry, cross-draughts and replacement-air requirements.
- Contaminant-appropriate fans, filtration, ductwork and safety interfaces.
- Measured airflow, pressure loss and accessible filter or collector maintenance.
From site survey to handover
We start by recording the space layout, occupancy, operating hours and existing equipment. We then coordinate air volumes, pressure losses, duct routes, intake and discharge positions, power supplies and maintenance access. After installation, we check the actual air distribution and control response against the agreed design. We explain filter access, operating schedules and maintenance responsibilities to the building team, so the installation can be managed after handover.
Frequently asked questions
Can one extraction system serve every production process?
Not automatically. Different contaminants may need separate collection, treatment and discharge arrangements. Mixing air streams can create new maintenance or safety issues, so we assess compatibility before combining systems.
When should the system be reassessed?
Changes in process material, equipment layout, production volume or working practices can affect capture and treatment. We compare the revised operation with the original design and measurements.
